Swiss botanist. Privat-dozent in botany at the university of Zürich, 1870–80; professor extraordinarius, 1880–3; professor, 1883–1903. Founded the Zürich Institut für Allgemeine Botanik, which followed Nägeli’s microscopical and anatomical approach. Darwinist and socialist. Married Carolina Port in 1875. With Carolina, edited the Atlas der Botanik (1878–83). They divorced in 1890. Married Louisa Müller in 1891; they divorced in 1906.
