Professor of zoology, University of Lille, 1864–72. Professor of ichthyology and herpetology, Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris, 1872. Director of the laboratory of teratology, later attached to the Ecole des Hautes-Etudes, 1875. Awarded the grand prize in physiology by the Académie des Sciences for Recherches sur la production artificielle de monstruosités (1877).
