Naval officer. Entered the merchant navy in 1840. Entered service with the Cunard line in 1851. Commanded the steamer Great Eastern during the laying of the Atlantic telegraph, 1865–6. Managing director, Eastern Telegraph Company, 1866–93. Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, 1870. Knighted, 1866.
