To John Higgins   10 December [1849]

Down Farnborough Kent

Dec. 10th

Dear Sir

I am much obliged for your letter & enclosures of the 8th informing me that 224’16 5 has been placed to my account at Robarts & Co. I am very sorry to hear of the gloomy prospects of the Farmers & of the chance of reduced rents.—1

Dear Sir | Yours very faithfully | C. Darwin J. Higgins

Footnotes

In addition to the continuing debates over the financial consequences of the repeal of the corn laws, CD may possibly be referring to the extensive floods in various parts of the country in December, including Lincolnshire where CD had his farm. Much damage was done to agricultural land (Annual register 1849, Chronicle, p. 173).

Summary

Discusses his accounts.
