John Lothrop Motley
1814–77
American historian and diplomat. AB, Harvard, 1831; studied in Germany until 1835. Secretary of the US legation in St Petersburg, 1841–2. Author of The rise of the Dutch Republic (1856). Minister to Austria, 1861–7; ambassador to the Court of St James, 1868–70.
