Georg Marggraf
1610–44
German naturalist and explorer. Studied botany, astronomy, mathematics, and medicine at several European universities. Travelled to South America as assistant to Willem Piso, a doctor employed by the Dutch West Indian company. Worked on Brazilian flora and fauna under Piso’s direction.
