1781–1859

Oriental scholar, colonial administrator, diplomat, and politician. MP for St Michael’s, 1818–26, Heytesbury, 1830–1, South Hampshire, 1832–5, Portsmouth 1838–51. Founding member of the Royal Asiatic Society. Developed pleasure grounds at Leigh Park, Hampshire. Author of works on China. FRS 1803.
