Ferdinand Paul Wilhelm von Richthofen, Freiherr von Richthofen

1833–1905

German geologist, geographer, and explorer. Accompanied the Eulenberg expedition to Japan, China, and Thailand, 1860. Continued travelling alone in Indonesia, the Philippines, and Burma, and then explored the western part of the United States. Explored China, 1868–72. Professor at the University of Bonn, 1879–83; of Leipzig, 1883–6; and Berlin, from 1886.
