James Murphy
1853–1905
Irish surgeon. Specialised in obstetrics and gynaecology. Studied at Trinity College, Dublin, and in Edinburgh, London, Leiden, and Paris. House surgeon to the Sunderland Infirmary, 1874–6. Established a private practice in Sunderland in 1876. Lecturer in botany in the College of Medicine, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 1878, before being transferred to biology and then medical jurisprudence.
