My dear Sir

Will you be so kind as to allow my son to look for a paper in some Transactions at your Society. I daresay you could refer him to a paper by Prof. Haughton published (I think) in the Transactions, on the anatomy of the Ostrich.—2

Yours very faithfully | Ch. Darwin

Footnotes

The year range is established by the printed stationery, which is of a sort that CD used between January 1872 and November 1874.
It is not known to which of his sons CD refers. The society is probably the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin. Samuel Haughton published a paper on the muscular anatomy of the leg of the ostrich in his series, ‘Notes on animal mechanics’, in volume 9 of the Proceedings of the Royal Irish Academy (Haughton 1864–6, pp. 50–61). There is another paper on the anatomy of the ostrich in the same volume of the journal (Macalister 1864). CD cited a different paper by Haughton from the Proceedings of the Royal Irish Academy in Descent 1: 129 n. 46.
