Darwin Correspondence Project

From R. F. Cooke   7 February 1874

50A, Albemarle Street, London. W.

Feby 7 1874

My dear Sir

We want to find the original woodcuts to the “Voyage of a Naturalist” for the sake of taking Electros for M Reinwald & we cannot do so, with the exception of 4 cuts which we find here.1

There are 14 in all.

It occurs to us, that perhaps they have been used in some of your more recent works, may I ask if you can assist us.

Yours faithfully | Robt. Cooke

C. Darwin Esq

I think the 1st. Election at the Atheneum is Monday 16th.2

Footnotes

Cooke refers to Journal of researches 2d ed., which had the spine title ‘Naturalist’s voyage’. The French translation by Edmond Barbier was published by Charles-Ferdinand Reinwald (Barbier trans. 1875). See also letter from C.-F. Reinwald, 4 February 1874.
CD had probably asked Cooke to support the election of his nephew Henry Parker to the Athenaeum Club (see letter to R. F. Cooke, 10 April [1874]). In 1871, John Murray had asked CD to support Cooke’s own election (see Correspondence vol. 19, letter from John Murray, 20 February [1871]).
