Footnotes

D. Appleton & Co. published the third US edition of Origin (from the sixth London edition) in 1873; they may also have had on hand copies of the second US edition (from the fifth London edition), which was published in 1870.
The London edition of Expression was published in November 1872, and the US edition in December 1872, although the date given on the title page is 1873 (Freeman 1977).
The US edition of Descent was published in 1871.
