To W. H. Flower   30 June 1873

Down, | Beckenham, Kent.

June 30. 73

My dear Professor Flower,

I am much obliged to you for having kindly sent me your lecture, which has interested me greatly.—1 The manner in which you show the relations of the recent & extinct forms of the 2 great groups of the Ungulata, makes the whole case wonderfully clear & striking.2

With many thanks | Yours sincerely | Ch. Darwin

Footnotes

Flower’s lecture, ‘On palaeontological evidence of the modifications of animal forms’ (Flower 1873), was delivered on 25 April 1873 at the Royal Institution of Great Britain. CD’s annotated copy is in the Darwin Pamphlet Collection–CUL.
The division of the ungulates (hoofed animals) into two orders, Perissodactyla (odd-toed) and Artiodactyla (even-toed), had been established by Richard Owen (see Flower 1873, p. 97).
