Dear Darwin

My Servant carries this to you—& if you are free to act; as I suggest, would take your letter to Sir H. Holland back to town & post it, & so save time.1

How would it do to send my letter to you on to Sir H Holland? it would explain matters— Please use your own judgment. Sir H. is said to be a very intimate private friend of Mr Gladstones.2

Hooker’s letter, which was forwarded to Henry Holland by CD, has not been found. It concerned his dispute with Acton Smee Ayrton (see letter from J. D. Hooker, [2 October 1871] and n. 10).
William Ewart Gladstone was the prime minister.

Summary

JDH’s servant carries his letter to Henry Holland about problems with Ayrton. Suggests servant take CD’s letter to Holland to town and post them at same time. Holland is said to be very intimate friend of Gladstone.
