Down— Beckenham, Kent.

H. Ramu.

To Mr Charles Darwin

I received your letter in reply to the one that I had the honour of sending you recently and if I am sending you this sketch of the head of a goat with the appendages in question rather late, it is because I have not been able to do otherwise than wait for the opportunity to reproduce one in passing, so to speak, as I do not own one.2

Do not be vexed with me if my sketch is hardly successful; I am not accustomed to drawing animals and my lack of knowledge is the more noticeable in that my model moved so much and had very little good grace about keeping still.

In any case the sketch is precise as regards the appendages and the place where they are situated.

These appendages are 70m/m in length and 10m/m in diameter, approximately, without the hair which covers them and the transversal distance between the two is of around 50m/m.3

In handling them to take account of their diameter I pinched them fairly hard to see if the goat would feel it— But it hardly noticed, it seems to me.

These appendages seem to me to be absolutely of the same nature as those that you have described in pigs.

I think I remarked that they were sometimes a little further forward towards the jaw, and sometimes a little lower than on the sketch.

It only remains, dear Sir, for me to assure you of my deep respect

H. Ramu.
