I am much obliged for yr letter of the 12th, recd yesterday.1 As you seem desirous that I shd become a shareholder in the Artizan’s Dwelling Co., & as the object seems an excellent one, I shall be happy to take ten shares; & I will send a cheque for £100 on receiving the proper documents.2

I return the enclosed letters; & wishing success to the Company in its benevolent purpose | I remain dear Sir | yours faithfully | Charles R. Darwin

The Artizans, Labourers, and General Dwellings Company was founded in 1867 with the intention of building affordable housing for the working classes (Artizans’ & General Properties Company Ltd [1967], pp. 6–7). CD erroneously recorded the purchase of shares worth £100 on 12 September 1871 in his Investment book (Down House MS).
