Darwin Correspondence Project

To A. R. Wallace   [23 November 1866?]1

6. Queen Anne St. | W.

Friday.

Dear Wallace,

I am up for a few days, & as I shd. very much like to have half-an-hours talk with you, & as my strength always oozes away as the day advances, I daresay you will excuse my calling on you tomorrow, Saturday (stomach permitting me), at about 10.

Thanks for your note received at Down2

Yours very sincerely | C. Darwin

Footnotes

The date is conjectured from the broad mourning border of the stationery and the form of the salutation. CD began addressing Wallace as ‘Dear Wallace’ in 1864. CD’s sisters Emily Catherine Langton and Susan Elizabeth Darwin died in February and October 1866 respectively (Correspondence vol. 14). CD visited London from 22 to 29 November 1866; 23 November 1866 was a Friday (see Correspondence vol. 14, Appendix II).

Summary

Will call on Wallace tomorrow (Saturday) at 10.
