Darwin Correspondence Project

To J. V. Carus   11 October [1870]1

Down. | Beckenham | Kent. S.E.

Oct 11th.

My dear Sir

I send by this post the four first sheets of my book.2

Mr. Murray charges £14 for 64 stereotypes, & this I think is very reasonable as the cost of casting is £7 & the profit £7. Your publisher if he thinks fit, had better communicate direct with Mr. Murray of Albemarle St.3 Please to observe that I give 14 handsome woodcuts from Brehm of which I cannot supply copies.4 These are not indispensable but it would be a pity if they were omitted. I enclose a list.5 Your publisher might negociate for stereotypes of these from the publisher of Brehm’s Thierleben

My dear Sir, yours very sincerely | Ch. Darwin

Footnotes

The year is established by the relationship between this letter and the letter to J. V. Carus, 5 October [1870].
John Murray had written that he would soon send four sets of sheets of Descent (see letter from John Murray, 10 October [1870]); Carus was to translate Descent into German (see letter from J. V. Carus, 2 October 1870, and Carus trans. 1871).
See letter from John Murray, 10 October [1870]. Carus’s publisher was E. Schweizerbart’sche Verlagshandlung, headed by Eduard Koch.
CD planned to include in Descent woodcuts from Alfred Edmund Brehm’s multi-volume work on natural history (Brehm et al. 1864–9).
The enclosure has not been found. For CD’s initial list, and the published woodcuts, see Correspondence vol. 16, letter to Cassell, Petter & Galpin, 31 December 1868 and n. 1.
