Hochgeehrter Herr!
Gleichzeitig mit diesem erlaube ich mir Ihnen ein Exemplar des eben erst fertig gewordenen
Dub, kurze Darstellung2
zu übersenden und glaube, dass das Werk sowohl nach Inhalt als auch nach Ausstellung Ihren Beifall haben wird; falls Sie noch mehr Exemplare wünschen so bitte es mir gefaell, mitzutheilen.
Aus einer englischen Zeitschrift “Academy” durchlaeuft jetzt die deutschen Zeitungen die Nachricht, dass im Laufe des naechsten Jahres ein neues Werk von Ihnen die Presse verlassen wird, dessen Inhalt den Menschen betreffen soll.3
Herr Professor Carus dem ich desshalb bereits geschrieben habe wird Ihnen wahrscheinlich bereits Mittheilung davon gemacht haben.4
In der angenehmen Hoffnung, dass auch dieses Werk wie die früheren in meinem Verlage Deutsch bearbeitet von H Carus erscheinen wird, bitte mich gefäll, zu benachrichtigen, ob ein neues Werk erscheint und welches der Inhalt desselben seyn wird.
Nachdem ich all Ihre Werke aufmerksam durchgelesen habe und bis jetzt nirgends eine Schlussfolgerung betreffs des Menschen darin vorkam, kann ich mir nur denken, dass die neueste Schrift des Herzog von Argyll über den Urmenschen Sie veranlasst hat auch diese Frage zu berühren.5
Augenblicklich wird an der vierten deutschen Auflage der “Enstehung der Arten” gedruckt und werde nicht ermangeln Ihnen sofort nach Erscheinen eine von Ihnen noch zu bestimmende Anzahl von Exemplaren zuzusenden.6

Highly honoured Sir!
As I write, I venture to send you a copy of the just released
Dub, Kurze Darstellung2
and I believe that the work, both in its content and presentation will meet with your approval; in case you wish to receive further copies please let me know.
The German press is spreading the news from the English journal “Academy” that a new work by you will appear in the course of the coming year, the subject of which is man.3
Professor Carus, to whom I have therefore already written about it, will probably have already communicated this development to you.4
In the agreeable hope that this new work, too, like earlier ones will be adapted into German by Mr Carus for my press, please kindly notify me whether this new work will appear and what its content will be.
Having read all of your works with great attention, and having noted that until now you have drawn no conclusion concerning man, I can only guess that the latest work of the duke of Argyll on prehistoric man has induced you to address this problem.5
At this moment we are in the process of printing the fourth edition of the “Origin of species”, and I shall not fail to send you, as soon as it appears, a number of copies which you will yet need to specify.6
