CD served as a vice-president of the Geological Society in 1843 (see Proceedings of the Geological Society 4 (1842–5): 64). His reason for requesting the number of copies of Proceedings sold is not known. The Annual Report of 1843 lists £18 realised from the sale, but the number of copies is not specified.
