My dear Darwin
It's lucky this letter contains no secrets for I opened it & read it without looking at the outside—as it came enclosed with other matters—
Schleicher is a great loss—

The enclosure has not been found, but was evidently a letter from Ernst Haeckel to CD, of 12 December 1868 (see letter to Ernst Haeckel, 20 December 1868). Haeckel accidentally enclosed the letter to CD in his letter to Huxley, also written on 12 December 1868 and containing other enclosures (Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine Archives, Huxley papers, 17: 196). - +
