Darwin Correspondence Project

To Ernesto Susanni   18 August [1868]1

Freshwater

The above address will explain my delay in acknowledging & thanking you for your kind note.2 I return home in two days’ time & no doubt shall then find the pamphlet which your distinguished countryman, the Count Mariani (?) has given me the honor of sending.3 Should you have any opportunity, I hope that you will present with much respect my thanks to the Count. If on my return home, I do not find the pamphlet I will communicate with you.

With my best respects and thanks, I remain […]

Ch. Darwin

Footnotes

The year is established by the address. The Darwins stayed at Freshwater on the Isle of Wight from 17 July to 20 August 1868 (Emma Darwin’s diary (DAR 242)). The addressee, address, and date are provided in the sale catalogue.
Susanni’s letter has not been found in the Darwin Archive–CUL.
CD refers to Terenzio Mamiani della Rovere (see also Correspondence vol. 14, letter from Rudolf Suchsland, 16 April 1866 and n. 6). There is a copy of Mamiani’s 1868 article, ‘Nuove considerazione intorno al sistema di Darwin’ (Mamiani della Rovere 1868) in the Darwin Pamphlet Collection–CUL. It is lightly annotated, but not by CD.
