CD quoted from William Dell Hartman’s ‘Journal of the Doings of Cicada septemdecim’ on the drumming sounds of the male insect in Descent 1: 351; in n. 24, he noted that Walsh had sent him the extract. The extracts have not been found in the Darwin Archive–CUL; no book or paper in which they were published has been identified. CD had received information from Walsh on the stridulation of male insects in his letter of 29 August 1868.
