Sends a sheet of proofs. Will hold four others until he hears from VOK, because of expensive postage. Thinks illustrating Russian translation [of Variation] with woodcuts from A. E. Brehm's work [Illustrirtes Thierleben, 4 vols. (1864–7)] is an excellent idea.

June 3.

Dear Sir

I enclose a sheet & have 4 others ready to send but as each sheet with the envelope weighs an ounce the postage will be very expensive to you. Therefore I will wait till I hear again before sending the 4 other sheets.

With respect to what you say about illustrating my book with wood cuts from Brehm's work, it wd I think be an excellent scheme.

I have not seen Brehm's work nor do I know where I cd see it.

Believe me dear Sir | yours very faithfully | Ch. Darwin
