The paper that CD signed has not been identified, but a deposit into CD’s account of £699 1 s. 2 d. is recorded for 20 April 1867 with the notation, ‘Sale of Part of Land at Shrewsbury (Capital)’ (CD’s Account books–banking account (Down House MS); square brackets in original). CD had banked with the Charing Cross branch of the Union Bank of London since 1853 (see Correspondence vol. 5, letter to John Higgins, 11 April [1853]).
