The presence of the statement in the Darwin Archive–CUL indicates that Gray sent it to CD; Gray sent the previous year’s statement as well, and may have enclosed it with his letter of 18 July 1866 (see Correspondence vol. 14). CD sent a letter to Gray on 28 February 1867 that has not been found (see letter from Asa Gray, 26 March 1867), and Gray may have included the statement in a letter to CD of early February that also has not been found.
