Darwin Correspondence Project

To Stephen Paul Engleheart?   [April 1867?]1

Down

Tuesday Evening

My dear Sir

As Leonard will go to school tomorrow (Wednesday) afternoon will you be so kind as to let us have the note, properly addressed, about the sling.—2 His arm keeps quite comfortable.—

Your’s very faithfully | & obliged | Ch. Darwin

Footnotes

The date is conjectured from a reference to ‘Lenny’s arm’ in Emma Darwin’s diary (DAR 242) for 22 April 1867. Stephen Engleheart was the village physician in Down and was frequently consulted by the Darwin family (Freeman 1978).
Leonard Darwin was a pupil at Clapham Grammar School in South London (M. Keynes 1943).

Asks for a note about sling for Leonard’s arm, as he is about to leave for school.
