I shall have pleasure in signing the photograph as you request. Please make a mark whether you want the signature at the back or underneath the front. I shall be very much obliged for one copy of the journal, but pray do not send more as one will be quite sufficient.2

A lithograph made from a photograph of CD with an image of CD’s signature was published in the Quarterly Journal of Science, April 1866, facing an unsigned article, ‘Darwin and his teachings’ (Anon. 1866). CD later wrote to Samuelson, the co-editor of the journal, to comment on the article. His letter has not been found, but see Correspondence vol. 14, letter from James Samuelson, 8 April 1866. A presentation copy of the article is in the Darwin Pamphlet Collection–CUL.
