Sir.

I beg to acknowledge due receipt, by to-days mail—your letter of the 31st. containing cheque for £10. I do feel ashamed that I should have occasion thus to tax so heavily your generosity. I can only now tender my most sincere thanks to you for all; and express a hope that you will bear with & excuse me, until I get fairly settled in India, when I will be enabled to repay the percuniary part of my obligations to you.

Please excuse me writing so briefly as the time is nearly up for despatch of mail, & I am anxious to acknowledge by return receipt of the above cheque.

    CD's letter to Scott has not been found; however, see letter from John Scott, 29 July [1864] and n. 5. CD's Account book--cash account (Down House MS) records a gift of £10 to Scott on 31 July 1864.
