1. 8. 64

My Dear Sir

I cannot find any of my Chalk or Gault policipes any where. Can you help me to find them? I have no recollection about them whatever excepting that you figured some of them.1 If you returned them, how did you return them? To me direct or did you send them to the Geo. Soc?2

I shall be much obliged if you can enlighten me on the subject.

Most truly Yours | J. S. Bowerbank

C. Darwin Esqr &c—

Footnotes

CD had borrowed specimens of the barnacle genus Pollicipes from Bowerbank while preparing his monographs on the Cirripedia (see Correspondence vol. 4, letters to J. S. Bowerbank, 19 January [1850] and [8 March 1850]). Bowerbank is cited as a source of Pollicipes specimens from the Chalk and Gault deposits in Fossil Cirripedia (1851), pp. 54, 62–5, and 73–7. CD had sent some of the specimens to James de Carle Sowerby for illustration (see Correspondence vol. 4, letter to J. de C. Sowerby, [12 or 19 August 1850], and letter to J. S. Bowerbank, 10 September [1850]). The illustrations are in Fossil Cirripedia (1851), plate 3, figures 4 and 10, and plate 4, figures 1 and 7.
CD’s reply has not been found. Bowerbank had been a fellow of the Geological Society of London since 1832 (List of the Geological Society of London).
