Shaw was secretary of the Royal Geographical Society, London.
The Kaiserlich-Königliche Geographischen Gesellschaft of Vienna was the second foreign learned society to honour CD. In 1857, the German Academy of Naturalists, or Leopoldina, had elected CD to membership (see Correspondence vol. 6, letter to the Secretary, Academia Caesarea Leopoldino-Carolina Naturae Curiosorum, 8 September [1857]).
