Kippist was the clerk, librarian, and housekeeper of the Linnean Society. The society had opened a subscription in June 1856 to meet the cost of moving from Somerset House to its new rooms in Burlington House. Kippist noted on the letter, ‘(Cheque for £20 on Union Bk of London)’. The society held its first general meeting in Burlington House on 25 May 1857. See Gage 1938, pp. 44, 51. CD recorded this payment on 22 February 1857 in his Account book (Down House MS).
