The date range is conjectured from the letter's position in file in which it is contained at the Royal Society of London, and from Lubbock's death in 1865. The letter is at the end of its file, following the letter to J. W. Lubbock, 27 May [1856] (Correspondence vol. 6). Lubbock died 20 June 1865 (DNB); in his letter to CD, 22 and 26 March 1865, his son, John Lubbock, reported that his father was `far from well'. John William Lubbock lived at High Elms in Down (Post Office directory of the six home counties).
