From J. C. Clutterbuck   29 November 1881

Long Wittenham Vicarage, | Abingdon.

Nor. 29th 1881

Dear Sir.

As you received the sample of Buried clay very kindly (Nv. 15th)1 I thought it might interest you to have a sample of the surface soil together with the Buried clay as I believe I said the Clay was put on the meadow some 45 or more since, the specimen which I have sent by railway will shew the condition of the soil above and below the clay— the subject has interested me for many years and has been made generally interesting by your writings, which must be my excuse for writing to you again.—

I am dear Sir | Yr very Fly | James C. Clutterbuck

C Darwin Esqr.
