My dear Sir,

I venture to ask your acceptance of a copy of my book on your works.1 If I have carried the reasoning upon your facts to stages further than perhaps you would yourself admit is just, I hope I may be forgiven on account of the deep love I bear to all your labors & the enthusiasm with which they have inspired2

Yours faithfully | Edward B. Aveling.

CD had declined Aveling’s offer to dedicate the book to him, and had questioned the usefulness of Aveling’s arguments against Christianity and theism (see Correspondence vol. 28, letter from E. B. Aveling, 12 October 1880, and letter to E. B. Aveling, 13 October 1880).
