My dear Sir

I have signed the enclosed with much pleasure.—1

I am sorry to read what you say about your health.

Yours sincerely | C. Darwin

Feb. 11th

Footnotes

The enclosure was the nomination certificate proposing Robert McLachlan for membership of the Royal Society of London. The certificate, dated 10 February 1876 and bearing CD’s signature second on the list of proposers, is in the archives of the Royal Society (Royal Society, GB 117, EC/1877/11). The form was submitted on 24 February 1876 and resubmitted in 1877; McLachlan was elected as a fellow on 7 June 1877. Stainton had proposed McLachlan for membership in 1874 and asked CD to sign the nomination form (see Correspondence vol. 22, letter from H. T. Stainton, 15 January 1874).
