Mervyn Herbert Nevil (Nevil) Story-Maskelyne (1845–1911)

1823–1911

Mineralogist. Son of Anthony Mervyn Reeve Story (1791–1879), who in 1845 adopted the surname of Story-Maskelyne, and his wife, Margaret (1785–1858), only child and ultimate heir of Nevil Maskelyne, astronomer royal. Lectured on mineralogy, Oxford University, 1850–7; professor of mineralogy, 1856–95. Keeper of the mineral department, British Museum, 1857–80. MP for Cricklade, 1880–5; North Wiltshire, 1885–92. FRS 1870.
