Charles Louis Bernays

1815–79

German-born journalist in the US. Emigrated to Illinois in 1849, later moving to St Louis, where he took part in the running of the Anzeiger des Westens. Supporter of Abraham Lincoln, and briefly US consul in Zurich, Switzerland, and Helsingør, Denmark. Editorial writer for the Republican. Wrote on art and music for the Journal of Speculative Philosophy; translated parts of Schopenhauer and Comte, and studied Hegel.
