Dear Sir

I am very much obliged to you for your kindness in having sent me your studies on the skull of the Chimpanzee.2 This subject is most important & interesting; but I grieve to say that I cannot read Italian: I will, however, get my wife to translate parts to me.––

The year is established by the dated inscription in CD’s copy of Giglioli 1872 (see n. 2, below). This letter was first published in Correspondence vol. 21, with the text from description in a sale catalogue. The current text has been transcribed from an image on another dealer’s website.
Giglioli sent CD Studii craniologici sui cimpanzé (studies of chimpanzee craniology; Giglioli 1872). CD’s annotated copy in the Darwin Pamphlet Collection–CUL is inscribed, ‘To Charles Darwin Esqr. F.R.S. &c &c &c. A slight token of profound respect and great esteem, from his ardent admirer and fond desciple | Florence 2 Feb. 1873. Enrico H. Giglioli’.
