My dear Dr. Gunther
Do you feel inclined as yet to leave home? A little change wd be good for you. Newton of Cambridge (& I hope Hooker & Swinhoe) is coming here next Saturday Jan. 22d to dine, & to stay till Monday morning. Will you join us: it wd give me great pleasure if you can prevail on yourself to come.—2 I enclose memorandum about best trains.—3

The year is established by the reference to a visit to Down by Alfred Newton, Robert Swinhoe, and Albert Günther on 22 January (see n. 2, below).
According to Emma Darwin’s diary (DAR 242), Günther, Newton, and Swinhoe came to Down on 22 January and Joseph Dalton Hooker on 23 January.
The memorandum has not been found.
