Darwin Correspondence Project

From J. J. Moulinié   6 March [1868]1

Geneva

6th March,

Dear sir,

I just receive notice from Mr. Reinwald that the first volume of the french translation will be ready and given out next week for the latest, the second will follow as quickly as the activity of the printer will permit, for the MSS. is quite ready and at his disposal.2

On receipt of the corrected sheets you sent me last,3 I forwarded immediately to Paris, the three important additions of the eleventh chapter, hoping that owing to their position in the volume, they could still arrive in time to be inserted in their proper place; Dr. Hildebrand’s case, page 396; that to Note 126, and that of Dr. Bowerbanks;—4 I am happy to inform you that in fact they did come in time, the last sheets of the volume though ready, not having then been yet printed off.

As for the other corrections and additions happily of less importance, they will be given as Errata.5

Allow me, Sir, to renew my sincere thanks for the kindness with which you have granted me the right of making known to foreign science, your most interesting and valuable work, an honour of which I hope not to have shown myself too unworthy.

I remain, Dear Sir, | your’s gratefully and respectfully | J. J. Moulinié

Footnotes

The year is established by the reference to the French translation of Variation (Moulinié trans. 1868; see n. 2, below).
Charles-Ferdinand Reinwald, CD’s French publisher, sent the first volume of Moulinié trans. 1868 later in the month (see letter from C.-F. Reinwald, 26 March 1868).
In a letter of 2 January 1868, Friedrich Hildebrand had told CD of his success in creating a graft-hybrid of two potato varieties. This information was added to the second printing of the first edition of Variation (Variation 1: 396; see also Moulinié trans. 1868, 1: 419–20). CD also added information from Hildebrand’s letter on maize and apple trees (Variation 1: 400, n. 126, and Moulinié trans. 1868, 1: 424, n. 126). In Variation 1: 404 n. 138, CD quoted from a letter sent by James Scott Bowerbank an example of the influence of previous matings in dogs on the progeny of subsequent matings (see Correspondence vol. 14, letter from J. S. Bowerbank, [4 November 1866?]; this letter should have been dated [4 November 1867]).
Moulinié added a page of errata following the contents pages of each volume of Moulinié trans. 1868 (see ibid. 1: facing p. 444, and 2: facing p. 532).
