The date is established by the relationship between this letter and the letter to John Murray, 9 February [1868]. The letter consists of corrections to Variation, published on 30 January 1868 (see CD’s ‘Journal’ (Correspondence vol. 16, Appendix II)). A second printing, incorporating minor additions and corrections, was printed on 19 February (CD’s ‘Journal’ (Correspondence vol. 16, Appendix II)). The correspondent has not been further identified.
‘Bearing’ is not misspelled in the first printing of Variation.
These corrections were made in the second edition (see Variation 2d ed., 2: 66, 163, and 225).
