Darwin Correspondence Project

To Philip Lutley Sclater   9 December [1867]1

Down. | Bromley. | Kent. S.E.

Decr. 9th

Dear Sclater

I have no index of Proc. Zoolog. Soc.—at least no separate one, for I have not looked through each volume,—so I shd. be very glad of both indices, & they can be sent by same address as the Journal &c.—2

My list of Fellows is dated 1858; can you send me a more recent one?3

Some one has sent me the Intellectual Observer for December but it does not contain any article by you; hence I suppose that on Barbets is in the November Nor.4 If I do not hear from you in the course of the next week, I will order the Novr. number.

A talk with you always does me good, & I enjoy it much.—5

Yours very sincerely | Ch. Darwin

Footnotes

The year is established by the reference to the article in the Intellectual Observer (see n. 4, below).
CD refers to two cumulative indexes to the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London. The index for 1830 to 1847 was published in 1866, and that for 1848 to 1860 in 1863; there is a copy of each in the collection of unbound journals in the Darwin Library–CUL.
No list of fellows of the Zoological Society of London has been found in the Darwin Library–CUL.
CD may have received the December issue of the Intellectual Observer with the letter of 30 November 1867 from its editor, Henry James Slack. Sclater’s article on barbets was published in the November issue (Sclater 1867); there is a lightly annotated copy in the Darwin Pamphlet Collection–CUL.
CD frequently visited Sclater while in London (Lightman ed. 2004, s.v. Sclater, Philip Lutley); CD was in London from 28 November until 7 December 1867 (CD’s ‘Journal’ (Correspondence vol. 15, Appendix II)).
