Darwin Correspondence Project

To V. O. Kovalevsky   3 June [1867]1

Down. | Bromley. | Kent. S.E.

June 3.

Dear Sir

I enclose a sheet & have 4 others ready to send but as each sheet with the envelope weighs an ounce the postage will be very expensive to you.2 Therefore I will wait till I hear again before sending the 4 other sheets.

With respect to what you say about illustrating my book with wood cuts from Brehm’s work, it wd I think be an excellent scheme.3

I have not seen Brehm’s work nor do I know where I cd see it.

Believe me dear Sir | yours very faithfully | Ch. Darwin

Footnotes

The year is established by the relationship between this letter and the letter from V. O. Kovalevsky, 15 May 1867.
Kovalevsky had asked CD to send the sheets of Variation for his Russian translation not pre-paid (letter from V. O. Kovalevsky, 15 May 1867).
CD refers to Brehm et al. 1864–9 (see letter from V. O. Kovalevsky, 15 May 1867).

Bibliography

Variation: The variation of animals and plants under domestication. By Charles Darwin. 2 vols. London: John Murray. 1868.

Summary

Sends a sheet of proofs. Will hold four others until he hears from VOK, because of expensive postage. Thinks illustrating Russian translation [of Variation] with woodcuts from A. E. Brehm’s work [Illustrirtes Thierleben, 4 vols. (1864–7)] is an excellent idea.
