The reference is to Variation. All the German editions of Variation were translated by Julius Victor Carus and published by E. Schweizerbart’sche Verlagsbuchhandlung of Stuttgart. There is a note in ink at the foot of the letter: ‘Answered & declined June 5. 1867 for J.M. | CAP’. John Murray was CD’s British publisher.
Julius Grosser has not been further identified.
