Darwin Correspondence Project

From John Lubbock   1 July [1866]1

High Elms

1 July

My dear Mr. Darwin

I return you Muller with many thanks.2 I wish I had read it before delivering my lecture on metamorphoses.3

On some points he seems to me to contradict himself, & in places his meaning is obscure, but it is certainly a remarkable memoir.

Hoping you continue to improve I remain | Yours affect | John Lubbock

C Darwin Esq

Footnotes

The year is established by the reference to Lubbock 1866a (see n. 3, below).
Lubbock refers to Fritz Müller’s paper ‘On the metamorphoses of the prawns’ (F. Müller 1864a). For CD’s interest in the paper, see the letter to Fritz Müller, 11 January 1866 and n. 8.
Lubbock’s lecture, ‘On the metamorphoses of insects’, was given at the Royal Institution of Great Britain on 9 March 1866 (Lubbock 1866a). A lightly annotated copy is in the Darwin Pamphlet Collection–CUL. See also Correspondence vol. 11, letter from John Lubbock, 23 [February 1863] and n. 5.
