Darwin Correspondence Project

To John Murray   14 April [1865]1

Down Bromley Kent

Ap. 14th

My dear Sir

Many thanks for the advertisement.— I am much pleased that you are content with the title.—2

Yours sincerely | C. Darwin

Footnotes

The year is established by the relationship between this letter, the letter from John Murray, 1 April 1865, and the letter to John Murray, 4 April [1865] (Correspondence vol. 13).
Murray advertised CD’s forthcoming book, Variation, in the Reader, 15 April 1865, p. 427. The notice is under the heading ‘Mr. Murray’s quarterly list of works in the press’, and the title given is ‘Domesticated Animals and Cultivated Plants, or the Principles of Variation, Inheritance, Re-union, Crossing, Interbreeding, and Selection under Domestication’. The word ‘re-union’ was a misprint for ‘reversion’ (see Correspondence vol. 13, letter to John Murray, 2 June [1865]). Variation was not published until 1868.

Summary

Thanks for advertisement, and pleased Murray likes title (of Variation).
