To Hugh Cuming1   [4 November 1849]2

Down Farnborough Kent

Sunday

My dear Sir

I am much obliged for your note. I will come on Wednesday about 9 oclock. Many thanks for your kind invitation to Breakfast, but my stomach is so particular, that I am afraid to go about before eating.—

Yours very sincerely | C. Darwin

Footnotes

The conjectured recipient is based on letter to Hugh Cuming, [October? 1849], in which CD stated he would return specimens to Cuming in early November.
The conjectured date is based on CD’s trip to London to attend the council meeting of the Geological Society on Wednesday, 7 November 1849 (Council Minute Books, Geological Society Archives).

Summary

Arranges to call on Wednesday but declines a breakfast invitation, as his stomach is so particular that he is afraid to go about before eating.
