To Charles Voysey   21 November [1876]1

Nov. 21

Rev. C. Voysey

Dear Sir

I have taken some days to reflect over your propositions.2 Although I agree with much which they contain, I cd. hardly sign them conscientiously. Moreover I doubt whether any such protest wd. do good. Unless it were signed by a very much larger array of well-known & highly respected names, than is in the least degree probable, it wd., as I believe, actually weaken the cause which you wish to support   Therefore I must decline signing.

I remain. Dear Sir | Yours very faithfully | C. D.

Footnotes

The year is established by the relationship between this letter and the letter from Charles Voysey, 17 November 1876.
See letter from Charles Voysey, 17 November 1876. The exact subject of the propositions has not been identified, but see the letter from T. H. Huxley, 19 November 1876.

Summary

Agrees with much of CV’s proposed protest but cannot sign it. Feels it is likely to do more harm than good.
