Darwin Correspondence Project

To Smith, Elder & Co.   [19 October 1846]

7. Park St | Grosvenor Sqr

Monday Night

Dear Sir

I have just received my copy of my work & I write in great haste to beg you instantly to give instructions to the Binder not to bind the coloured Plate with its back to all the letter press; it is almost impossible to refer to it, as it is bound in my copy; I never saw such a stupid trick.—

You must, if you please, get the man to cut out all that are bound & paste them in to front the letter-press1

In Haste | Dear Sir | Yours very faithful | C. Darwin

I like much the looks of the volume. I have not yet seen any advertisements

Footnotes

In CD’s personal copy of South America the coloured plate showing three sections of the Cordillera is, as he says, bound so that it faces towards the back cover; other copies of South America seem to have it bound in the correct way. CD’s copy is in the Cambridge University Library.

Bibliography

South America: Geological observations on South America. Being the third part of the geology of the voyage of the Beagle, under the command of Capt. FitzRoy RN, during the years 1832 to 1836. By Charles Darwin. London: Smith, Elder & Co. 1846.

Summary

Objects to the stupid way a plate is bound into South America.
